Objectives

This module aims to introduce students to key concepts in business analytics, with a special emphasis on common areas of application. It also explores the links between the behavioural (decision science) perspective on decision support and the management science/business analytics perspective.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate decision science and business analytics perspectives on organisational decision support and identify and explore their complementarity
- Explore and comment on the emerging role of ‘big data’
- Display familiarity with major areas of application of business analytics
- Apply accurately a range of the key methods employed in business analytic approaches to problem solving

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Indicative content
Introduction to Business Analytics; Analytics on Spreadsheets; Visualizing and Exploring Data; Probability Distributions and Data Modelling; Sampling and Estimation; Statistical Inference; Predictive Modelling and Analysis; Regression Analysis; Linear Optimization; Applications of Linear Optimization; Optimization Models with Uncertainty; Decision Analysis.

Reading from core texts; practice exercises; limited amount of reading of key articles on both decision sciences and business analytics.
