Objectives
This module aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the empirical and theoretical research literature in the areas of selection and training. Through considering the practical issues associated with implementing selection and training systems and processes, students will be able to apply their knowledge in an organizational environment while working as consultants and/or researchers in their subsequent careers.Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to and critically evaluate:
- selection and training as integrated processes for achieving competence
- each stage of the selection and training processes
- the main methods of job analysis, selection, and training delivery
- the concepts of reliability, validity, and utility in selection and training contexts, for the purpose of evaluation
- competency theories and apply them to selection and training delivery

This is a core compulsory module on the MSc Organizational Psychology, MSc Business Psychology, and MA Organizational Behaviour programmes, addressing content within three of the six syllabus areas identified by the British Psychological Society (BPS) for their MSc programme accreditation.

Technical Training (Optional)
For students participating in the OTU activities, an additional 25 hours private study for completing the portfolio is expected.
NB: The optional technical training constitutes the Occupational Test User (OTU) psychometrics training course accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS). This training course is included within this module for administrative reasons but is a stand-alone qualification (block-taught after the main module), not a compulsory part of this module, and students enrol onto it separately.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will receive informal feedback on their learning during the practical exercises. Furthermore, the lectures will be interactive and student questions will be encouraged throughout. Formally, they will receive feedback on their coursework assignment performance.For students participating in the additional OTU activities, they will be expected to submit a portfolio in order to be awarded with the the OTU qualification. The porfolio is marked on a pass/fail basis and feedback on performance will be provided. The OTU activities will consist of applied exercises which will enable students to develop skills in the administration of psychometric tests.
