LUBS 5389M Research Design and AnalysisThis module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
This aim of this module is to equip students with a thorough understanding of advanced research designs and techniques, together with a good grounding in analysis. It introduces advanced research approaches, design and analysis techniques appropriate for researching behaviour in organizations. The module aims to use lectures, discussions, practical exercises and assessments to support students in enhancing their ability to select appropriate research designs, methods and analytical tools to test competing ideas, theories and interventions in a wide range of contexts.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically assess the efficacy of a wide range of research designs and approaches for investigating differing research problems
- Apply appropriate research designs and method for evaluting behaviour in a range of applied contexts
- Apply accurately a range of advanced research techniques
- Critically assess and apply advanced analytical techniques
Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Report research results in a clear and consistent way
- Think critically and contrast competing ideas
Subject Specific
- An introduction to more advanced research designs used in research
- Learn how to form hypotheses which are relevant to different statistical analytical techniques
- Understand and, where appropriate, analyse different requirements to assess the suitability for using differnt statistical techniques
- Use advanced analytical techniques to analyse data
- Learn set academic practices and conventions for writing up a results section
- To be able to better read and understand results sections in academic papers to help with cross-module learning
Syllabus
Indicative content includes techniques which examine differences between groups on organisational behaviour phenomena, and exploring relationships between different organisatoinal behaviour phenomena, as well as consideration of research design.
Practical tutorials in analysis and other research techniques will be integrated with the theoretical teaching to reinforce learning and to support application in the Dissertation project. The module contributes to stage 1 of the QOccPsych.

Private study
Due to the nature of topics and analytical techniques covered, each will require further independent study to learning. This will involve reading research methods texts to put content into context, reading journal articles to understand how academic researchers put into practice the principles of sound research design, and rehearsal with practical exercises to develop expertise with specific analytical techniques. Time will also be spent on the assignment.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
- Students will receive formative feedback throughout the module, including immediate feedback on analytical performance during the practical sessions and on the workshop activities.- Summative assessment will take the form of an assessed piece of written coursework late in semester 2.
