Module summary

The module provides the opportunity for you to identify and develop research in an area of interest and produce a document of 12,000 words to document the process and findings. You are allocated a supervisor who will work with you on a one-to-one basis and may also facilitate some small group meetings in addition to one-to-one supervision.

Objectives

The dissertation is intended to provide a capstone to the modules individually and the programme as a whole. The module enables students develop a research proposal and carry this out in order to demonstrate their ability to plan and manage the task, as well as select, evaluate, analyse and synthesise both literature and findings to answer a research issue.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate literature relevant to the research question(s)
- Plan and carry out appropriate primary and / or secondary research in line with practical, methodological and ethical constraints and structures
- Synthesise literature analysis and other collected data to produce a document which clearly expresses the research process undertaken

Syllabus

Indicative content:
The dissertation module is supported by the Research Methods module (or, for MSc Enterprise & Entrepreneurship students, the New Venture Creation module)and also by specific inputs on choosing and developing topics, managing data, handling references and sources and project management.

The module is carried out after the end of Semester 2 over approximately 12 weeks although planning and development may be started prior to this period.

As this is a dissertation module, students work independently to carry out a research project with the guidance of an allocated supervisor.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring will be done via the supervision discussions and the evaluation of written work. Students are asked to see their supervisor at regular intervals, to record the meetings in note form, and check in via email if they have questions in between meetings.
