Applicants must have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate medical training at the University of Leeds or as part of an equivalent programme of medical training at another UniversityThis module is not approved as a discovery module
Module summary
This is a 10 Credit Level 3 Module which forms part of an intercalated degree in Medical Education.Students will receive classroom instruction on principles of assessment, types of assessment (formative/summative) with relative strengths/limitations; methods of feedback and appraisal in undergraduate and postgraduate education; standard setting in assessment. Participation in Peer Feedback and Feed Forward activities will take place in class and be individually formatively assessed The summative written assignment will include assessment design and evaluation.Objectives
The module aims to teach students about assessment methods in medical education.On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- critique the place of appraisal and assessment in undergraduate and post-graduate Medical Education;
- identify theoretical principles of feedback, appraisal and assessment;
- differentiate between appraisal and assessment;
- critically evaluate different methods of assessment including formative and summative;
- demonstrate ability to provide appropriate feedback and feed forward as part of appraisal/assessment.
Learning outcomes
The student should:
- be able to describe different assessment methods;
- understand the role of feedback in appraisal and assessment;
- recognise and be able to select appropriate assessment tools to match learning outcomes.

Syllabus

Private study
The students will use the private study time to search for sources and review papers prior to each seminar and will prepare an assessment method for a course (assignment).Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress (in a group setting) will be monitored informally during the seminars via observation and assessment of practical exercises and activities designed to test understanding. Tutorials will be used to monitor student progress informally on an individual basis through discussion. Students will be offered the opportunity to submit draft assignments. If students submit draft assignments they will receive formative feedback on their work.Methods of assessment
