Module summary

This module provides an overview of the eukaryotic cell and how it responds to and is altered in infectious and non- infectious disease.Particular emphasis is placed on a comprehensive grounding of cellular function by considering different cell types and associated disease states.

Objectives

The purpose of this module is to provide an overview of the eukaryotic cell and how it responds to and is altered in infectious and non- infectious disease.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:
- Describe the structure of the mamalian cell
- Appreciate how the mamalian cell responds to infectious and non-infectious disease
- Understand cellular function and the effects of disease in a range of cell types.

- The lysosome in heath and disease
- The endoplasmic reticulum in heath and disease

- Cell signalling in health and disease
- The omic revolution
- Studying cells
- Stem cells
- The immune cell
- Neuronal cells
- Epithelial cells
- Endothelial cells
- The cancerous cell.
