Module summary
This module provides a detailed introduction to the types of human disease caused by bacterial pathogens. Students will learn about how bacteria cause disease, types of disease and treatment of bacterial infections.Objectives
The purpose of this module is to provide a detailed insight into the different types of human disease caused by selected model bacterial pathogens and how these can be treated.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- Understand the different types of human disease caused by bacteria;
- Describe the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of bacterial disease;
- Appreciate the factors that predispose to bacterial infection/ hinder effective treatment;
- Assimilate lecture material with self-directed learning resources provided in the VLE.

- The role of biofilms in bacterial infections
- STDs
- GI tract infections
- Bone, joint and soft tissue infections
- Respiratory tract infections
- Infections of the heart and circulatory system
- CNS infections
- Infections in the health-care setting
- The role of biofilms in bacterial infections
- Bacterial vaccines
- Antibiotics & antibacterial chemotherapy
- Antibiotic resistance.
