Module summary

Retour interpreting, or interpreting into a B language, is an increasingly important aspect of conference interpreting both on the private market and at international institutions. This module introduces and develops the skills required for successful, professional retour interpreting. Students will develop the key skills for this interpreting direction in the consecutive mode – building on their note-taking, analysis and deverbalisation skills as well as core skills in target-language reproduction and presentation and public speaking skills.

Objectives

The main objectives of this module are to introduce the key practical and theoretical concepts and issues at play when interpreting into a B language; to aid student development in B language competence and to enable students to develop effective strategies in consecutive interpreting into B. In order to achieve this, the module focuses on specific techniques, such as deverbalisation, note-taking, and paraphrasing to support effective, clear and precise discourse delivery into a B language. Through the module, students also develop their understanding of the retour interpreting market and demands of the users of interpreting services.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, students should be able to:

- Effectively analyse, deverbalise, and internalise the original speaker's meaning;
- Effectively reconstruct and communicate the source speaker’s message and intentions in a clear and precise manner in the target language, using techniques such as paraphrasing appropriately;
- Communicate and present clearly and effectively in a B language;
- Demonstrate understanding of and ability to use the strategies employed when working into or out of English as part of an A/B language pair.

Syllabus

This module will have a clear skills-based progression to enable students to develop their B-language interpreting competence.

The module will begin by focusing on the enhancement of students' B-language presentation and delivery skills.

In the second period of the semester, commencing with consideration of the theoretical aspects of retour interpreting, the module will employ a broad range of materials including A-lanugage speeches prepared by students on "Topics of the Week", which will be used to train students in developing the skill of delivering clear, concise, accurate and meaningful renderings in the consecutive mode.

Practicals will include students providing on-the-spot summaries of spoken and written language; presentations on a range of professional topics and consecutive interpreting with notes into the students' B-language. Practical and critical feedback will be offered to students by native speakers, experienced tutors in retour interpreting, as well as by their peers.
