Module summary

This module will provide the opportunity to apply learning to work based issues and problems. This module allows students to design, negotiate and manage their own study relevant to their working experience. Students can build their project around a theme, topic or investigation, which directly relates to their working circumstances and previous experience

Objectives

A work-based learning module allows students to design, negotiate and manage their own study relevant to their working experience. Students can build their project around a theme, topic or investigation, which directly relates to their working circumstances and previous experience

Learning outcomes
The module will provide the opportunity to undertake a substantial and focussed work based project and apply the learning to work based issues and problems.
On completion of this module, the student will be able to:
- identify an appropriate professional work based project
- provide a rational for undertaking the project that takes account of policy and practice need
- critically appraise relevant international literature and evidence relating to the project
- identify clear learning objectives relevant to the project
- synthesise and apply appropriate evidence based approaches to address the identified topic area
- using an appropriate model, design an effective framework for measuring the outcomes of the project
- critically evaluate the impact of the learning from the module
- effectively communicate the project outcomes

Skills outcomes:

Identify, design and undertake an appropriate work based project.
Communicate the project findings effectively by oral and written presentation


Syllabus

The module gives students the opportunity to focus on issues of real concern to themselves and their work place. They can use their work place as a centre of learning, supported by the expertise and resources of the University.
Work based learning includes the following features: -
1. It relates to a study chosen by the student.
2. Learning arises from undertaking the study.
3. It is work based.
4. It is autonomously managed by the student.
5. Learning takes place without direct instruction or formal tuition. Learners are expected to take a large measure of responsibility for carrying out the study and learning will take place as an associated activity.
6. Work based learning involves people managing their own learning through topic based study aimed at enhancing personal and professional development.

Private study

Private study is allocated within this module to be used for reading textbooks and journal articles relevant to the module and includes time for course work and assignment preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Group tutorial incorporating discussion of proposed study

Submission of 200 word synopsis that clearly articulates the topic area the student is intending to study. This is then agreed and an appropriate supervisor identified

Individual tutorials with project supervisors and students to evaluate progress at regular intervals during the project or equivalent e-mail/phone communication (6x1 hour)

Monitoring of student progress:
Work based learning involves people managing their own learning through topic based study aimed at enhancing personal and professional development The student will be supported by tutors based at the university and by a mentor in their workplace (optional as appropriate) and by extensive materials accessed via the VLE.

Regular group tutorials embedded into the learning will allow individual and group progression to be evaluated, providing feedback to both students and teachers.

As a student you will know how well you are doing by: attending tutorials, discussing progress to date, exploring and sharing any challenges you are experiencing with the work based project and listening to and learning from the experiences of other students

There is a formative 200 word synopsis of intended project. Student progress will be monitored by submission of a learning contract identifying the student's selected overall theme or subject for their learning, a plan for the structured learning events along with learning objectives for each event. This will be agreed with the student's academic supervisor.
