Module summary

This module enables you to learn and apply research and project skills in a structured and reflective period as a volunteer in a local organisation or project, so that you increase your awareness of potential of the voluntary and community sector to contribute to positive social change. You will be exposed to and then apply research and project planning skills to a period of experiential learning. This module has been created in response to requests from students for more practical and applied experience.

Objectives

This module will enable you to engage with and apply research and project skills, in contexts of social change and development intervention. It will facilitate a period of experiential learning in a relevant organisation or project, and enable you to apply research and project planning skills, whilst developing your capabilities as a critical reflective practitioner

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, you should be able to:
- Critically evaluate the contribution of the voluntary and community sector in achieving positive social change.
- engage in debates about research and ethics in relation to action;
- appreciate the relevance of both qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches and data;
- find appropriate secondary data from published, unpublished and web-based sources;
- plan an applied research project.
- understand and critically evaluate the tools and techniques of project planning in the public and not for profit sectors
- carry out a stakeholder analysis and prepare a budget;
- understand and apply principles of project logic in a logical framework format and in a theory of change;
- Understand and apply political analysis to the design of intervention.
- understand the theoretical approaches to evaluation of social development projects;
- prepare a development project proposal using a range of management tools
- Critically reflect on your own practice.

Syllabus

Semester 1-
Working in the voluntary and community sector- challenges of doing development intervention.
Research skills for development
Literature review, designing investigations, qualitative and quantitative data
Critical reflective practice
Finding an opportunity for experiential learning
Semester 2-
Project planning skills for development
Problem and policy analysis, stakeholder analysis, logical framework planning and theory of change, problem-driven iterative adaptation, monitoring and evaluation, resource and budget assessment.

Private study

Students will engage with background reading in order to understand the skills introduced by the module.They will also volunteer in an organisation or project to facilitate experiential and applied learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

This module embeds critical reflective practice, and so formative feedback is integrated in all student workshops. Peer and self feedback opportunities will also be part of the workshops.
