Module summary

The module equips students with a high-level interdisciplinary and critical understanding of media and culture. By exploring applied examples students will be able to apply conceptual, theoretical and empirical insights from recent sociology to the study of contemporary issues within the media and culture.

Objectives

The module provides an advanced understanding of contemporary approaches to the study of media and culture. It critically explores flows and networks whilst drawing on pertinent examples to illustrate the ways in which culture can be read and resignified.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of and critical engagement with the key conceptual, theoretical, empirical and critical debates within the sociological study of culture and the media,
- apply conceptual understanding to the analysis of contemporary debates and issues
- demonstrate a mastery of the key texts from the field of the social science concerned with the study of media and culture
- display advanced abilities for critical thinking and in-depth analysis of existing scholarship on media and culture;
- demonstrate the ability to produce and present a piece of individual analysis of media and culture that employs appropriate conceptual frameworks and critical inquiry.


Syllabus

Students will engage with a range of sociological approaches to the study of media and culture including the Frankfurt School and Feminists approaches and will draw on the work of a number of authors including but not limited to Bauman, Bourdieu, Skeggs, Mulvey and hooks. In order to understand the implications of flows and networks the module will also consider cultural imperialism, cosmopolitanism, and migration. Topical issues in relation to fashion, youth, subculture and popular music will provide the substance as reading and resignifying culture are critically examined.
