Objectives

By the end of these tutorials the students should:
- Have an appreciation of the research undertaken by their academic tutor.
- Understand how a scientific technical report is structured and have experience of writing their own report.
- Understand how a field report is structured and have experience of writing their own report.
- Have undertaken a small scale research project on a key topic in Geology, and have learnt how to use library and web resources (e.g. Web of Knowledge), to collect, summarise and reference information
- Will have experience of presenting a short talk to a small audience.
- Will have developed an awareness of Academic Integrity issues.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will:
- Have a basic knowledge of one area of research within the school
- Have improved their understanding of the geology of a key field area (trip undertaken as part of SOEE1570) through reflecting on their observations and writing a field report.
- Have a more detailed knowledge of one key topic in Geology, augmenting the introductory lectures that are part of Geology 1 (typically Earth in space and time; Rock Cycle etc.)


Skills outcomes
This module is specifically designed to help students to develop their written, oral and visual communication skills through an experiential cycle of practice, feedback and reflection. It will improve their understanding of the scientific method and research skills within the context of geological subject knowledge through exposure to diverse resources including literature, the Internet and fieldwork.


Syllabus

Semester 1:

Tutorial every 2 weeks (excluding Reading Week, week 6), supported by Information Literacy Skills Workshop (in week 2), online Information Literacy Skills MCQ and Skills@library online tutorials.
• Tutorial 1: introduction to tutorials; discussion of tutor’s research area; setting of assignment 1
• Tutorial 2: peer review of assignment 1; writing skills; technical writing and how to use citations; setting of assignment 2, complete Academic Integrity tutorial
• Tutorial 3: staff feedback on assignment 2; setting of assignment 3
• Tutorial 4: essay feedback and further resources, Ingleton report progress check• Tutorial 5: Draft Ingleton report feedback. Set final Ingleton report
• Tutorial 6: Submit final Ingleton report hardcopy; reflective feedback session discussing writing and research into teaching (looking ahead).

Semester 2:

Tutorial every 2 weeks, supported by Skills@library online tutorials.
• Tutorial 7: introduction to activity; set talk and report
• Tutorial 8: how to prepare and give oral presentations.
• Tutorial 9: oral presentations; peer review and staff feedback.
• Tutorial 10: poster presentations, peer review and staff feedback. Setting of 1500 word literature report
• Tutorial 11: hand in reports. Reflective feedback session discussing writing and Geology.

Semester 1:
• Revisiting and reflecting on the online skills tutorials: 2 hours
• Completing the online Academic Integrity questionnaire: 2 hours
• Finding out information on tutor’s research area, and reading around subject: 3 hours
• Planning and writing assignment 1: 3 hours
• Planning and writing assignment 2: 5 hours
• Planning and writing assignment 3: 5 hours

• Collating field observations and supporting information, writing draft field report: 8 hours
• Planning and writing final field report: 8 hours

Semester 2:

• Researching literature topic: 26 hours
• Planning and preparing oral presentation: 5 hours
• Planning and preparing poster presentation: 5 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance will be monitored to ensure engagement by students. The ongoing assessments in both semesters and follow-on tutorials will be used to gauge progress.
