Pre-requisite qualifications

Non-attendance of the fieldtrip without good reason will incur a significant financial cost to the student.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will be able to:

- organise logistics to mobilise a geophysical field programme
- collect a variety of geophysical measurements, mindful of their accuracy and precision and the importance of good documentation
- process and analyse the data to undertake in-field quality assurance to professional standards
- present the results verbally and as a poster.

The field work itself will normally take place over a period of ca. 10 days.

Syllabus

Preparation week
- organise logistics to mobilise the geophysical field programme
- check software and instrumentation
- revise understanding of geophysical methods and surveying techniques.

Fieldwork
- collect a variety of geophysical measurements, mindful of their accuracy and precision and the importance of good note taking
- process and analyse the data to assure the quality control in the field
- present the results verbally and as a poster.

The field work itself will normally take place over a period of circa 10 days.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored by presentations during the fieldwork and interaction with staff members supervising the surveying.

In addition to the summative assessments, each group will be required to produce a "data disk" containing an electronic version of all data. The data disk will not be marked, but submission of this disk is required to pass the module.
