Objectives

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to;
- Log in to the university PC network and gain access to networked library resources, the World Wide Web and email;
- Store, retrieve and organise data files;
- Demonstrate the fundamental principles of word processing and have gained experience in the use of MS Word;
- Operate spreadsheets and Excel;
- Know how to access and use the University libraries;
- Operate a variety of study skills including note taking, examination preparation and time management;
- Demonstrate a variety of communication skills including written and oral, verbal and non-verbal communication;
- Have had an introduction to problem solving, individually and in groups;
- Have initiated a personal development profile;
- Define relevant University procedures and regulations, facilities and opportunities;
- Have normally undertaken a combination of teaching/coaching awards at a basic level and equivalent work placement/experiences;
- Define some of the generic practical skills required for sport and exercise degrees. 


Syllabus

- Logging in and using ISS
- Using Outlook, WWW, and on line library services
- Using the Windows operating system, Word, PowerPoint and Excel
- Using the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)
- Access to, use of and information retrieval from the University libraries
- Note taking, examination preparation and technique (including MCQs), time management
- Essay writing skills
- Scientific report writing skills
- Presentation skills, including body language, use of support materials (OHP, video, PowerPoint), structure and timing
- Planning for, executing, recording, evaluating and reflecting on personal development
- Problem solving activities, individually and in groups
- University processes and documentation, including Taught Students Handbook, module enrolment, choice of programme and modules
- SES processes, including feedback mechanisms, student/staff committee, programme and module handbooks, declaration of academic integrity, all aspects of submission of assignments, plagiarism
- University, faculty and SES support and welfare services, such as counselling, student finances, and personal tutors
- University opportunities, sporting, cultural and philanthropic, such as Campus Connect, Action, Nightline, and mentoring
- Attend and complete either 24 hours teaching or coaching award courses at an intermediate or basic level in self determined activities or equivalent periods of relevant work placement, or a combination of these
- Practical skills including various generic scientific ones.

Private study

- 16 hours: reading (1 hour per lecture)
- 6 hours: preparation for practicals
- 24 hours: writing up/analysis of practicals
- 83 hours: preparation for assessments
- 6 hours preparation for tutorials (including Leeds for Life documentation)

- 24 hours:
a) attendance at NGB training/assessment, and/or
b) attendance at work experience

- 4 hours: planning for NGB/Work Experience
- 5 hours: reflection and consolidation.
