Continued progression on MBIOL from Level 2 to Level 3 (minimum average of 65%)

Objectives

- To develop skills in the design of a research project, including literature researching;
- To develop a high level of written communication skills;
- To develop an understanding of specific research techniques.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Plan an experimental research project, including developing specific objectives, hypotheses and an appropriate timeline/milestones;
- Undertake a comprehensive and critical evaluation of the literature;
- Develop writing skills in order to communicate research to both expert and non-expert audiences;
- Consider and deal with the ethical issues associated with the research project;
- Consider and deal with health and safety issues in order to allow research to be carried out safely and in accordance with the University's safety regulations;
- Understand and have experience in using research techniques appropriate to the research question;
- Analyse and present scientific data in an appropriate manner.


Syllabus

- Students will select/develop a working research project in consultation with supervisor.
- As part of selection students will be required to carry out a literature review according to the specific project pursued in the co-requisite module. Each student will be required to undertake an in-depth investigation into the background, existing research and current trends in the selected topic producing a critical analysis of the existing literature and other relevant ideas and sources.
- The supervisor will be responsible for overseeing the work in an advisory capacity, but the students will be expected to plan, perform literature review, execute and interpret their own work.
- Projects may be individual or group, insofar as the collection of data may be collaborative, but individual students will use the data to address differing project titles.

This includes associated reading, project planning, analysis of experimental data, writing of results, viva preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

12 Project supervision meetings will take place throughout the projects duration. Supervisors will comment on a maximum of 3 draft pages of the report. Formative viva will monitor student overall performance and understanding of research project.
