Continued progression on MSci from Level 3 to Level 5 ( achieve an average of at least 65%, in the level 3 project components and an overall credit weighted year average, normally of at least 65%)

Module summary

Professional development will be emphasized providing skills for successful completion of Master’s level course work and scientific production outputs.

Objectives

Students will understand how:
- To help develop the skills necessary for Level 5 MSci study, for a future career as a researcher and/or employment within a higher capacity in the sport and/or exercise science industry.
- To provide experience of engaging within a research science environment.
- To help improve scientific communication skills
- To develop knowledge and appreciation of research impact.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- Demonstrate competency in communicating their research as well as critiquing the work of others in the context of their own work;
- Demonstrate an ability to perfom structured self-reflection and critique of their progress, experiences and research, demonstrating research and career planning and preparation.
- Demonstrate the ability to analyse and assess their work and research from multiple perspectives making justified predictions of the consequenes and potential impact of their work at multiple scales.


Syllabus

Students will be required to attend a number of professional development workshops delivered by the Faculty of Biological Sciences, attend sport and exercise science research seminars, complete and reflect on appropriate work experience, public engagement and/or specific career development courses.

Private study

This includes preparation for sport and exercise science research seminar presentation, reflective practice, searching and reading relevant material for work experience and/or specific career development courses and impact in scientific research, reading appropriate scientific papers to contribute to journal clubs (tutorials).

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

In addition to opportunities to meet academic staff throughout the academic year, formative feedback will be formally provided for specific components of the modules, for example, development of students’ curriculum vitae, letters of application, etc.
