Pre-requisite qualifications

Continued progression on MSci from Level 3 to Level 5 ( achieve an average of at least 65%, in the level 3 project components and an overall credit weighted year average, normally of at least 65%).

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able
- To conduct an individual extended research project within the discipline(s) of sport and exercise science.
- To experience interacting within a research science environment. working in a research group and interacting with research scientists;
- To develop the skills necessary to search and analyse relevant research literature at a high level of competency.
- To gain experience in the analysis and presentation of scientific data.
- To report scientific findings through the preparation of a written report in a journal article format and poster.
- To defend the written report orally through an oral examination.

Learning outcomes
Students will be expected to have:
- Gained knowledge of the process of project management including project preparation, organisation and implementation.
- Completed a research project demonstrating competent use practical research techniques applicable to their topic area.
- Completed analysis of research data including the use of appropriate statistical tests.
- Prepared and submitted a written report in the form of a journal article in a scientifically acceptable format, in line with specific journal submission guidelines. There is an expectation that material from the report would be of a quality suitable to contribute to scientific publication;
- Developed sophisticated skills in the appropriate and selective use of electronic literature search tools such as Web of Science and Medline.
- Be able to defend their research at a viva voce and at a conference style poster presentation.


Syllabus

An independent research project on an original topic within sport and/or exercise science will be conducted within the Faculty research teams, sometimes in combination with outside agencies.

There will be regular meetings with the project supervisor, normally on a weekly basis, with a proforma record of the outcome of the meeting.

Guidance on report writing will be provided and the project will be assessed by submission of a written report, oral examination, poster defence.

This includes associated reading, project planning, analysis of experimental data, dissertation, poster and viva preparation.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

11 Project supervision meetings will take place throughout the project’s duration. Supervisors will comment on a maximum of 3 draft pages of the report and a draft outline of the poster, and provide viva preparation.
