Objectives

- To introduce strategic thinking and skills for textile product innovation.
- To introduce research methodology and approaches for testing of potential markets.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students, will have acquired:
- a thorough understanding of the process of innovation for textile materials and products
- a thorough understanding of the new product development (NPD) process for textile materials and products including product prototyping
- an understanding of research methodology techniques used in textiles
- an ability to identify potential markets for new textile materials and products
- an appreciation of the methods and processes used to determine the suitability of new textile materials and products for use in different markets.

Skills outcomes
By the end of the module, students, will have acquired:
- experience of the process of developing new textile products that are fit for purpose
- a thorough knowledge of the use of electronic publication databases to gather information on academic papers, periodicals and patent disclosures
- an understanding of the strategic approaches that are used for managing intellectual property including patent applications
- an ability to analyse, collate and present (orally and in writing) technical and market information relating to materials and products.


Syllabus

This module is an introduction to the basic concepts and practices of textile product innovation and textile product development. It combines inputs from textile technology, design, fashion and product design. It develops understanding of the methods and processes involved in the development of ideas from concept to commercially-viable textile materials and products.

Case studies will illustrate the role of creative thinking, research, multi-disciplinary research collaboration, product prototyping and intellectual property management in textile product innovation and development.
