Module summary

Everybody needs to use the transport system as part of daily life and so we all have opinions about it based on our own personal experiences. But it is a much greater challenge to be able to see “the big picture”, as that requires understanding of: how current transport systems have evolved; what impacts they have on society, the economy and people’s lives; and what factors may help or hinder how we are able to travel in the future. This module will use a range of approaches (traditional lectures, interactive workshops and fieldwork) to explore how travel and mobility contribute to quality of life, but also consider how transport activity causes a range of problems for society and the environment that have moved it up the political and media agenda in recent decades. No previous study of transport is required and the module is appropriate to a wide range of disciplines. It is particularly relevant for those studying Geography and for degree programmes related to business, social science and the environment.

Objectives

To help students understand:
- the role of transport and mobility in modern societies;
- trends in travel and key issues affecting transport in different local, national and global contexts; and
- how these issues relate to key topical debates in society.

Learning outcomes
Awareness of and initial engagement with the transport literatures (including academic and policy literatures, practice case studies and news media).

Students will learn about the full range of dilemmas facing the transport sector. By the end of the module they will be able to appreciate the complex nature of transport and mobility and apply their own ideas and experiences to understanding and engaging with topical debates.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Through weekly tutorial sessions including student presentations and discussion groups plus a mandatory 1000 word fieldwork report and a 1000 word assessed essay at the end of the semester.
