Objectives
The module aims to familiarise students with the engineering aspects of the design of transport infrastructure.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to demonstrate:
- understanding of the principles of engineering design as they apply to transport systems;
- familiarity with the engineering design requirements associated with road construction and with public transport infrastructure;
- appreciation of the environmental impacts of transport systems.
Syllabus
Highway design standards. Highway capacity. Principles of junction design. Principles of route location. Principles of horizontal and vertical alignment. Engineering aspects of road safety (inc signing & lighting). Principles of pavement design. Environmental impacts (inc pollution, severance and noise). Design of public transport infrastructure.
MSc(Eng) Transport Planning & Engineering only: Earthwork quantities.
MSc Transport Planning & the Environment only: Vehicle emissions modelling.

Private study
The students will be expected to read a number of key texts and papers to underpin their knowledge.The course assessment will involve a coursework.
For students taking MSc(Eng) Transport Planning & Engineering, this will be an assessment of route locations.
For students taking MSc Transport Planning and the Environment, this will be based on modelling the vehicle emission impacts of a town bypass.
