Module summary

The module as a whole will give the students a foundation in the underpinning principles of Cardiology and Vascular Sciences. Students will develop the knowledge required to apply to practice. Utilising a blended learning approach students will be provided with both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning.

Objectives

To introduce the basic fundamentals of clinical Cardiovascular Science

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:

1. Develop an understanding of the breadth of the application of science associated with Cardiovascular Sciences and is able to work safely and professionally within these environments.
2. Describe the role of Cardiology and vascular science in relevant patient pathways
3. Extend broad basic and clinical sciences knowledge and apply that knowledge with respect to cardiology and vascular science.
4. Explain the application of safe and effective clinical practice in physiological measurement associated with Cardiovascular science
5. Explain the basic principles underpinning the routine investigations and procedures carried out in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases

Skills outcomes
Fundamental knowledge to apply to cardiovascular practice.

Anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology applied to cardiovascular sciences including

Cardiac and vascular system
Pathophysiology of key body systems related to cardiovascular physiological science

Application of safe and effective clinical practice in cardiovascular physiological measurement including

Risk Management
Disabilites, including learning disabilities
Children and adults
Introduction to Cardiac Physiology

Investigations and procedures carried out in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease
Characteristics of recording equipment and their evaluation
Basic electrocardiography
Recognition and interpretation of normal ECG waveforms
Control of the circulation
Cardiac embryology and fetal heart development
Atherosclerosis and its relationship with cardiovascular disease
Heart failure and its effect on the cardiovascular and other body systems

Introduction to Vascular Science
Investigations and procedures carried out in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease
Characteristics of recording equipment and their evaluation
Anatomy of the vasculature and blood flow
Diseases of the vascular system

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Progress will be monitored through formative processes which include the workbook, VLE discussion boards, and interactive class tests as previously outline.
The students will be provided with a workbook during week 1, on a weekly basis they will be required to complete relevant ECG interpretation tasks, which will be discussed and reviewed during the following weeks lecture. This will enable students to self- identify the need for additional support at an early stage.

Examination pass mark for this level 1 module is 40, if this is not achieved the student will be offered further attempts in line with School policy. Re-sit will occur within the August assessment period to allow completion prior to progression point.
