Module summary

This module engages students with museum and art gallery exhibitions, interpretation, collections management, curatorial practice and museum and art gallery audiences. The focus is on fine and decorative arts and their curatorship, display and interpretation in museum and galleries and on temporary exhibitions in museums and galleries.

Objectives

To engage with key elements in the classification, curatorship, display and interpretation of objects and their audiences in the museums and galleries in Leeds and the region; to place the display and interpretation of objects in the broader context of the history of the fine and decorative arts.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to:

Have knowledge of key elements in the classification, curatorship, display and interpretation of objects in the museum and art gallery collections.

Be familiar with key visitor studies and audience research techniques.

Have knowledge of the broader history of museum display and interpretation and the role of temporary exhibitions.

Have a sound understanding of how the display and interpretation of collections informs knowledge, through the direct experience of interpretation, display and through the creation of a narrative around objects through a paper (virtual) museum/art gallery exhibition project.

Syllabus

The module is divided into 4 parts, taught over two semesters. Part 1 is an introduction to key elements in the study of museum and art gallery collections and museum/gallery audiences. This develops into a consideration of the collections management systems and the taxonomic principles behind systems of classifying objects in the museum and the ways in which audiences engage with collections.

Parts 2 and 3 focus on the display and interpretation of fine and decorative arts in Leeds Museums and Galleries and at other selected locations in the region.

Part 4 brings together all the preceding elements of the course as students are required to put together a paper (virtual) exhibition using objects from a collection they have studied, taking into account the curatorial, conservation and interpretation and audience engagement questions that may arise. This exercise includes the writing of catalogue entries, a catalogue narrative essay and an analysis of the virtual exhibition.

Private study

Students are expected to undertake private study to include museum/gallery visits beyond the assigned museum visits where possible. Students should also make use of on-line museum/gallery resources.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students are required to deliver 2 x small group presentations (non-assessed) over the 2 semesters, based on pre-determined readings and/or subject themes emerging from museum visits. Students also deliver 2 x 1,000-1,2000 word written projects (1 in semester 1; 1 in semester 2). The seminar teaching format also ensures ample opportunity for discussion and testing students comprehension and progress.
