Objectives
The topics included will cover:- Aircraft General Knowledge/Principles of Flight: a basic understanding of the construction of light aircraft, the aerodynamic forces acting upon these aircraft, the workings of the 4-stroke combustion engine and the fuel, ignition and electrical systems involved.
- Human Performance and Limitations: an understanding of the physiological, psychological and ergonomical challenges of flight crew.
- Meteorology: the ability to recognise and interpret weather phenomena pertinent to flying light aircraft and to understand the vital importance of weather conditions for the safety of flight. The ability to de-code aviation-related meteorological forms and information and make basic weather forecasts, again for the safety of flight.
- Air Law/Operational Procedures: to have knowledge of the rules and regulations required for safe flight within UK air space.
- Flight Performance & Planning: to have knowledge to plan and operate safe and efficient flights within UK air space.
- Communications: to be introduced to the rules of the strict language of the air required for flying.
- Navigation: a basic knowledge of the use of navigational procedures and radio aides to help with the accurate navigation in visual flight conditions.
- Students will have the opportunity to take 9 x CAA PPL exams through the year. These will be optional, though recommended, and act as a formative part of the module.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have an understanding and knowledge of the theoretical requirements for gaining an EASA Private Pilot Licence.
