Objectives
Students should be able to demonstrate the ability to plan, execute and report on a laboratory investigation.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have:
- completed a laboratory or field research project or a computer based research project;
- gained experience in the collation, analysis and presentation of scientific data, including the use of computer packages;
- prepared and submitted a detailed report, in a scientifically acceptable format. This report should include an appropriate summary of relevant literature, an outline of the aims of the project, descriptions of the methods used, details of the results obtained, conclusions drawn from these results and indications for future studies that might be undertaken. The relative balance of content of these sections will vary depending upon the type of project you are undertaking;
- developed skills in the appropriate and selective use of library resources, including computer based search tools including online databases such as ISI Web of knowledge, Medline and PubMed;
- the competence to read critically a scientific paper and to identify the key features of the study; you should be able to write a scientifically suitable abstract for a research paper;
- the ability to prepare a poster that presents their research results, and to answer questions on the work;
- the competence to interpret data presented in scientific papers and to assess them critically in order to draw appropriate conclusions;
- gained an understanding of a broad range of subject areas in the biological sciences.
Skills outcomes
Project formulation, data collection and analysis, writing and visual plus oral presentation skills (poster and associated viva).
