ObjectivesThis module has two sets of objectives:
- subject-specific: to deepen and broaden, and reinforce understanding of, particular topics within neuroscience, particularly relating to modules being studied in parallel with it, and to introduce broader aspects of the subject not covered elsewhere in the course.
- transferable skills: tutorials will cover and assess a wide range of skills, including critical reading, data analysis, and different forms of presentation.
By the end of this module students should be able to:
- Effectively communicate data from research papers in oral and written form;
- Explain key concepts in research;
- Demonstrate an ability to defend a position;
- Evidence skills that demonstrate good employability;
- Demonstrate problem-solving and data analysis skills;
- Critique research papers and discuss their findings;
- Demonstrate good time keeping and task management;
- Work effectively in groups.
This module will consist of an introductory lecture (at the beginning of the semester) together with 6 tutorials, on a range of topics relevant to the Biomedical Sciences. Each module will be individually assessed, using different methods, to provide an opportunity to gain experience in a range of transferrable skills.

Private studyThe private study time will be used primarily in preparing for the tutorials: learning about the topic to be discussed, and preparing a presentation using the method listed for that tutorial. It is expected that students will spend an average of 4 hours per tutorial either collecting material on-line, or using online support tools. The remainder of the time each will be spent using classical resources, and preparing their presentations where appropriate. There is no final exam, so no allowance has been made for exam preparation time.
Opportunities for Formative FeedbackAttendance registers and marks will be collected from each tutorial and monitored by the module manager. This will allow an early detection of students who are struggling, and allow us to discuss it with the student concerned, and provide appropriate support where needed.
This module is mutually exclusive with other versions of this module.
