Objectives
On completion of the module, students should:- Have a basic understanding of the concepts involved in reaction engineering, chemical engineering and materials processing techniques;
- Be familiar with the basic terminology used in the chemical, materials industries;
- Understand the basic underpinning science involved in a range of unit operations;
- Be familiar with the design and operation of a range of process engineering equipment and operations;
- Be familiar with the properties, specifications and control measures of the major fossil fuels;
- Understand the basic science underpinning combustion in boilers and furnaces;
- Understand the principles of energy from renewable sources;
- Have developed a basic understanding of the science and engineering of nuclear power;
- Understand the basic environmental impacts of a range of industrial and energy related processes, including impacts to air quality, global climate, water quality, land and noise levels, and how they are monitored;
- Understand the basic concept of an environmental audit.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students will be familiar with a range of concepts, terminologies and unit operations used in production and process engineering, including reactor design, chemical and pharmaceutical process techniques, materials processing, energy production and utilisation, and nuclear power. They should also be familiar with related environmental effects and understand the basic concept of an environmental audit.

Research skills using a range of information sources.
Syllabus
Reaction engineering - introduction to ideal reactors; mass balance; rate of reaction; examples of industrial practice.
Chemical process engineering - batch and continuous processes; unit operations; production examples of chemical products, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and basic chemicals, biotechnology; plant health and safety issues.
Materials processing - process selection criteria; primary, secondary and tertiary processes; re-shaping, removal and build-up techniques; surface and heat treatments; case studies.
Energy - energy resources and consumption; properties, testing and specifications of major fossil fuels; utilisation of fuels in boilers and furnaces; renewable sources of energy.
Nuclear power - the role of nuclear power; introduction to nuclear physics and the nuclear fuel cycle; nuclear reactor design; nuclear safety, waste handling and plant decommissioning.
Environmental impact - introduction to environmental impacts on air and water quality, land and noise pollution, human and animal health; monitoring, environmental audits, best available techniques; cases studies.
