Taught: Semester 2 (Jan to Jun) View Timetable
Year running 2019/20
This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
The objectives of this research led module are as follows:- To apply the knowledge of physico-chemical properties of materials for the selection of materials as implants in the body as a service environment;
- To understand the performance of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites) in body environment;
- To understand the concepts of biosensors and ceramic coatings.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this module, students should gain knowledge and understanding of the requirements of materials and their stability in a biological environment. The relevance of this to materials selection, design and properties of medical implants and devices and to understand the biological processes will be demonstrated. More specifically, students should have gained an in-depth understanding of:
- the body as a service environment and the interactions between biomaterials and biological systems;
- the properties and requirements for biomaterials to be used in a range of applications within the body;
- the historical development of prostheses and reconstructive surgery and the part played by biomaterials development;
- the application of materials science in the design of biomaterials and dental materials;
- the principles and design of biosensors for common biomarkers;
- the types of materials currently used, their processing and structure-property relationships and in-service performance, and promising future developments;
- synthesis, characterisation and application of hydroxyapatite as biomaterial;
- engineered nanoparticles - their biological uptake and implications.
