Pre-requisite qualifications

Level 1 in Chemistry or Level 2 in Joint Honours (Science) with Chemistry or equivalent

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand the relevance of organometallic compounds to the real world;
- recognise that there are consequences associated with choosing to use organometallic compounds;
- have an appreciation of the bonding and reactivity of organo-main group chemistry;
- recognise and be able to illustrate the importance of different types of bonding and structure in organo-transition metal chemistry;
- be able to carry out an electron count in an organometallic species;
- understand the unique characteristics of the lanthanide and actinide elements;
- assess the relative merits of available methods for chemical separation of these elements;
- understand the role that they play in modern technology;
- appreciate the chemical effects of radioactivity in the actinides and the relevance to toxicity and environmental pollution.

Syllabus

An introduction to the organometallic chemistry of the main group and transition metals using some of their important applications to illustrate the importance of different modes of bonding and reactivity.

An appreciation of different types of structures and the prediction of stability using electron counting.

An introduction to the chemistry of the lanthanides and actinides, with particular emphasis on coordination and stereochemistry, physical properties and their applications, and chemical separation.

The chemical effects of radioactivity and the relevance to reactor fuel technology; the toxicity of plutonium and the environmental problems associated with containment of reactor waste.
