Module summary
The minor dissertation requires the student to design their own 6,000-word project on any topic, subject to approval from a potential supervisor and the module coordinator.Objectives
- To provide students with the opportunity to explore a chosen topic in Classics or Classical Civilisation independently.- To give students experience in the planning and execution of a substantial independent research project.
Learning outcomes
Students completing this module are expected to have acquired:
- an enhanced knowledge of their chosen topic;
- an understanding of the methodological issues and problems involved in the study of their chosen topic.
Skills outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate a range of subject-specific skills, including an ability to analyse critically various forms of primary evidence;
- demonstrate a range of transferable skills, including written expression, the organisation of personal study, and use of printed and online information sources.

E-mail and face-to-face contact with supervisor throughout the year. Students will receive a total of 3 hours' one-to-one supervision, distributed throughout the year by arrangment with their supervisor. Submission of 500-word plan in December and draft chapter (or equivalent) before the Easter vacation.Methods of assessment
