Module summary
This module introduces the Ancient Greek language from a complete beginners level, starting with the alphabet. It is suitable for those with no prior knowledge of Ancient Greek, but also those with a little prior experience but no formal qualification. It will use an introductory textbook to teach grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and translation, and over the two semesters will progress to a post-beginners / lower intermediate level of linguistic ability.Objectives
The module is designed to provide a solid basis in knowledge of beginners level Ancient Greek language - vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Students will learn to translate and answer comprehension exercises on passages of adapted, and some easier un-adapted, Ancient Greek writing. Their understanding of grammar and syntax will be developed through translating simpler sentences from English into Ancient Greek. The module will provide a foundation for those who wish to pursue study of the language to higher levels, e.g. during a PhD.Learning outcomes
Students completing this module will have acquired:
- a knowledge of Ancient Greek vocabulary, grammar, and syntactical constructions, as appropriate to a beginners level course;
- an ability to conjugate regular and some important irregular verbs in the most commonly used tenses, voices, and moods, and to decline regular and some important irregular nouns and adjectives;
- an ability to understand and translate into English adapted Ancient Greek passages and to tackle some simpler un-adapted passages with the aid of vocabulary and grammar/syntax notes;
- an ability to translate simple sentences from English into Ancient Greek;
- an appreciation of the Ancient Greek roots of many English and European words.
