Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have a detailed knowledge of various printing and coating technologies. They will be able to critically evaluate the attributes of printing and coating processes and understand the physical chemistry of such processes.

They should appreciate the significance of flow properties and formulation optimisation, and be able to develop and evaluate appropriate dispersion systems.

They should have detailed knowledge of various drying / curing processes, together with the underpinning mechanisms.

They will have a knowledge of various anti-counterfeit technologies and associated materials science principles.

They will have a knowledge and understanding of the chemistry of colorants and the physical chemistry of colorant-polymer interactions.

Syllabus

- Design of inks and coatings formulations to achieve desired properties for use in existing and novel application processes.
- Physical chemistry of printing inks, surface coatings and application processes.
- Printing and coating processes.
- Drying / curing mechanisms.
- Anti-counterfeit technologies.
- Colorants - structure and application (covalent bonding, h-bonding etc).
- Colorant application (to polymers) and properties of colorants and coloured materials (fastness).
