Objectives

This module aims to develop industry standard best practice and skills in the design and creation of web sites and other digital interfaces. It illustrates the importance of international standards with regard to usability and accessibility as well as technological platform independence. It aims to show how creative flair can be combined with industry standards to create professional quality products.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- understand the principles of human-computer interaction (HCI) that apply to interface design on the web;
- appreciate the different styles of interaction within certain situations and class of user;
- critically evaluate the effectiveness of a variety of web-based graphical user interfaces;
- utilise HCI principles in a web-based context;
- use this knowledge to re-design a website to professional standards of usability, accessibility and interface design.

Skills outcomes

Syllabus

The module covers the basic principles of HCI theory such as human-computer dialogue, user models, usability, cognitive models and the use of interactional devices. Approaches to the evaluation of user interfaces will be examined.

Issues surrounding the design of the graphical user interface will be explored including the use of metaphor, colour and iconography. Graphical user interfaces (GUI's) from a variety of web sites, animations and applications will be examined and evaluated in relation to the HCI theories outlined above.

Students will create an interface to a complex system which incorporates these principles and be in a position to apply them in the creation of web-sites, 'back-end' data systems, and interactive animations/simulations.
