Pre-requisite qualifications

Satisfactory performance on the MSc Artificial Intelligence for Medical Diagnosis and Care programme

This module is not approved as an Elective

Module summary

This module allows a student to select and undertake a small research project in the area of artificial intelligence in medical diagnosis and care. It will equip the student with research skills and that will prepare them for the PhD programme in AI in Medical Diagnosis and Care and give them practical experience developing and discussing AI solutions that have the potential to transform medical diagnosis and care.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should be able to:
- assess the feasibility of an AI solution for an application within medical diagnosis and care;
- carry out a critical review of the relevant literature;
- select and apply the appropriate research methods for their chosen project area;
- demonstrate independent application of the knowledge, methods and techniques that he or she has acquired during the MSc programme in producing a solution in the project. Normally some elements of software implementation of AI are expected;
- demonstrate skills in project management and research methods;
- present a coherent, conference-standard research paper and presentation.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the module, students will be able to:
• Design, build and test an AI application using sample data;
• Understand how AI applications can support improvements in medical diagnosis and care;
• Take a pro-active and self-reflective role in understanding the impact of AI on the health domain;
• Being able to critically and creatively identify and evaluate a potential solutions against political, economic, social and technological constraints;
• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the steps required to undertake research;
• Understand how to prepare an academic submission for a conference;
• Critique their own research and that of others.

Syllabus

The syllabus is essentially the stages of a research project:
- Introduction to research projects
- Defining a research question
- Developing a research protocol
- Undertaking a literature review
- Research methods using and evaluating AI
- Preparing a conference submission
This module is primarily based on self-study but students will have regular meetings with supervisors to discuss project work; where appropriate, meetings with external 'project owner' to ascertain direction and scope of project. Group seminars will be delivered at key stages during the module.

Private study

Students will spend their private study time:
- identifying, refining and agreeing a research question and study protocol
- planning and designing their project
- implementing the project
- writing up the report
- Critically reflecting on the limitations of their study and identifying where there is a need for future research

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored through seminar discussions and one-to-one discussions with the supervisors. A draft protocol will be reviewed and feedback provided to students. Email will be used to provide feedback and support to students.
