Module summary
The module provides opportunities for students to consider how meaning might be produced through studio practice. Students are encouraged to find and develop the content and form of their practice in relation to the discourse that surrounds contemporary cultural issues and art & design practices.Objectives
This module is concerned with the making and evaluation of self-directed studio practice. It is designed to provide skills and resourcefulness as a stage towards the students confidently taking full charge of their practical studio research and engagement with materials and processes.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
1. demonstrate a familiarity with processes, materials and concepts which relate to a developing studio practice
2. acquire and develop skills and techniques within areas of studio practice appropriate to their concerns and interests;
3. undertake appropriate contextual research related to their studio practice and present their findings in a coherent and accessible form which demonstrates critical ability.
Syllabus
This module will build on student learning gained through their studio experience in Semester 1. Experience will be gained in a range of art practices to evolve their interest in contexts, materials and techniques. Students will consider fitness to purpose in the application of two and three-dimensional materials and processes in making art from a range of art technologies including painting, sculpture, printmaking and lens based art.
Situations in which art and design may be experienced and created will be explored. The relationship between ideas and material outcomes will be considered as students engage with the work of other practitioners and identify contexts for their personal work.
A Research and Analysis File will be maintained throughout the module and the scope and format of assessed work will be discussed. This will provide a route to documenting research, reading and archiving practice.
Assessment is via the Research and Analysis File and consideration of the portfolio of work produced.

Private study
Private study time will be spent in the following activities:- Preparation of the research and analysis file (20 hours)
- Reading to support log, tutorials and seminars (45 hours)
- Preparation of 1,000 word reflective report (10 hours)
- Preparation of portfolio (97 hours).
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Studio and workshop development will be discussed through group and individual tutorials. Portfolio, sketchbook/journal and research and analysis file will be the critical learning tools to inform and record progress.Methods of assessment
