Module summary

This module will provide the opportunity to explore a variety of contemporary digital media practices. It will equip students with an appreciation and understanding of the value and relevance of contemporary digital media as a method of visual communication.A series of lectures will introduce a variety of contemporary digital media practices. The lectures will underpin the practical workshops and inform discussion and analysis of relevant materials. Students will be given the option to interpret design briefs using a range of digital media approaches.Developmental test versions/models will be produced and documented before creating final solutions. Students will document their research and developmental work in journals/sketchbooks in addition to digital solutions documented and recorded in the appropriate file formats for presentation and assessment.

Objectives

This module will explore visual communication through contemporary media. Students will analyse and investigate the transmission of ideas through linear and non-linear formats.
They will develop skills in using motion and interactivity to communicate ideas and information. They will also explore the world of digital design and new network media and its potential impact on the future of the graphic design industry.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student should be able to:

1. Understand the possibilities of digital design and show to compose a digital solution that effectively communicates a predetermined idea.

2. 
Produce professional standard storyboards, mind maps and site maps in relation to the design
 process.

3. Show an in-depth understanding of research methods to explore visual and auditory communication using a range of contemporary media processes and techniques.

Skills outcomes
- To identify and articulate the creative concept in relation to the delivery digital communications.
- To apply creative ideas through digital media.


Syllabus

This module will cover the following topics:

- User interface design and interaction
- Use of appropriate software for the production of animation, interaction and moving image.
- Exploration of digital design.
- Typography for digital design.

Private study

This time will be spent enhancing knowledge on the subject, improving technical ability and working on the module project.

- Independent use of mac cluster: 30 hours
- Independent visual research and experiment: 15 hours
- Directed research: 15 hours
- Reading selected texts: 16 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students progress will be monitored by the following methods:
-Attendance to the timetabled seminars/cluster sessions and lectures.
-Weekly progression discussions with an allocated tutor.

Student's Apple Macintosh skills will be monitored on a weekly basis, in the Mac Cluster sessions.
Students will maintain reference sources, record technical processes in a module log book and keep a disk of practical project work.
