Module summary

The module aims to provide an introduction to ways of using a wide variety of resources in the construction of a dissertation or other piece or research.The module examines a wide variety of resources and respective research methods.

Objectives

The objectives of this module are to:
- introduce a range of research methods
- prepare for Research Methods 2

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have provided evidence of being able to:
- evaluate the reliability and quality of research resources
- understand and interpret research resources within a variety of contexts
- appreciate the breadth of the resources at their disposal both within the University and outside it, and the ways in which these may be interrogated
- produce a logically developed, coherent analysis and interpretation resources based on research in written and in verbal form

Syllabus

The module examines the scope of research resources and interrogates their various uses and purposes.
The module will examine working with primary and secondary sources, ethnographic and auto-ethnographic approaches, working with people, working with data collection and interpretation, and what makes a good research question.

Private study

Independent online learning is facilitated by a website resource of slides and readings, which allows student to explore in more detail topics signposted in the lectures, and gain familiarity with key resources and ideas.

Private study includes set reading, further reading, visits to resources, preparation of an essay assignment. An essay of 3000-3500 words is presented for summative assessment.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress is monitored through attendance at lectures and assessment.
