Objectives

This module will enable students to select and use a wide variety of textile media and techniques to realise personal ideas and adjust them appropriately for a commercial market.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- appreciate and employ a range of textile design materials, technologies and processes appropriate to end use
- effectively research and analyse a topic visually
- develop and use a personal visual language
- effectively communicate design work in a professional manner.

Skills outcomes
Repeat pattern, CAD, yarn selection, machine knitting, three dimensional textile structures, fabric selection, understanding positive and negative space, market research


Syllabus

This project-based module encourages students to extend their personal practice through the use of innovative materials, techniques and processes relevant to their choice of specialism. Students will undertake visual research and market analysis, and employ this in the development of a range of textiles for a specific end use.

The module is delivered through a programme of lectures, practical classes and seminars.

Assessment is in two parts:
- students will submit an initial research and development portfolio, together with a marketing report mid-semester and
- a development and design conclusion portfolio at the end of the semester

Private study

- Research and library study: 40 hours
- Preparation of market report: 20 hours
- Preparation of design portfolios (including additional appropriate practice work): 94 hours
- Mounting and presentation of work: 10 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored via:
- Attendance at lecture, practical and seminar sessions
- Regular feedback from staff in practical sessions and from staff and peers in 'group critique' seminars
- Feedback on project submitted in week 6.
