Objectives
This module is designed to give students a broad understanding of one of the textile design specialisms, and further develop the knowledge and practical competencies specific to their chosen area. Students will follow one of two specialisms, structured textiles or digital textiles.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should have provided evidence of being able to:
- effectively employ visual research to develop original design ideas within the context of their specialist practice;
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the practical competencies and techniques specific to their specialist practice;
- appreciate and appropriately employ the relevant computer aided design and/or manufacturing technologies for their specialist practice;
- apply their knowledge of textile or garment construction processes in the design of products for a specific end use;
- undertake market analysis to identify trends in colour and style for their chosen end use;
- effectively communicate their design outcomes in a professional manner.

Syllabus
Structured textiles pathway: students develop the technical skills necessary to produce a collection of structured textiles using a range of techniques and technologies together with an understanding of the relationship between materials, structure and properties.
Digital textiles pathway: students develop an individual approach to visual research using a range of methods and processes, along with the technical CAD skills necessary to produce a variety of print structures e.g. placement, repeat, for fashion and interiors.

- Research and library study: 40 hours- Trend and market research: 20 hours
- Preparation of market report: 10 hours
- Preparation of design portfolios (including additional appropriate practice work): 81 hours
- Mounting and presentation of work: 10 hours.
