Module summary

This module introduces students to the safe treatment of patients under close supervision in the clinical environment. Teaching is delivered through a combination of lectures, small group teaching, clinical experience in the clinical skills environment, clinical observation and treatment of patients. The content of the module will relate to the skills and knowledge expected of a dental hygienist, while clinical development will be demonstrated through completion of a reflective clinical log, supported by feedback from staff and peers.The module will introduce the students to reflective clinical practice which will continue to be developed through subsequent years of the programme and prepare the students for lifelong learning as a dental professional.Elements of this module will be delivered alongside the Dental Surgery students continuing the theme of shared learning across year 1.

Objectives

To provide the knowledge, skills and experience to allow the student to practise safely in a clinical environment as a member of the dental team. This module will allow the student to apply to clinical practice, the principles that derive from the biomedical and behavioural sciences delivered through the other year 1 modules.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate through simulation the range of skills and through clinical experience a working knowledge of practical and professional requirements to practise as a dental hygienist under close supervision.
2. Recognise common abnormalities of the oral cavity and provide relevant preventative advice.
3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of medical conditions relevant to the practice of dentistry.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Individual verbal and/or written feedback will be provided at each supervised clinical and simulation session.
The NHS Electronic Patient Record records clinical experience, student performance and feedback. Students can access this information via their individual log book.
Monitoring and feedback on progress will take place during tutorials. These sessions will gauge progress with the student cohort and individual students allowing provision of appropriate support.
Patient evaluation/feedback collected following clinical sessions contribute to the student’s reflective log and are discussed with the individual student.
Reflective log will be reviewed periodically with the student during the module.
Student progress will be reviewed and appropriately managed through the School’s Student Progress/Clinical Progress Committee structure.
