Pre-requisite qualifications

5 x GCSE passes grade C and above
2 A level passes (or the equivalent)
These must include English and Biology

Module replaces

DSUR2113 a&b Restorative Dentistry;and combines parts of DSUR1120Tooth Deposits and Major Dental Diseases.

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:

- be competent at completing a range of procedures in restorative dentistry including cavity preparation, restoration placement, temporary cementation of crowns, appropriate moisture control techniques and impression taking;
- demonstrate a thorough understanding of cavity design and classificaiton, and pulp protection and direct restoration placement for the deciduous and permanent dentitions;
- understand the pulpal response to teh deep carious lesion and to restorative procedures;
- show a detailed working knowledge of the use of matrices;
- describe in detail restorative materials in relation to their contents, properties, handling and uses;
- describe in detail the nature, properties and uses of dentine bonding agents;
- appreciate the factors influencing the selection of materials for the restoration of teeth;
- understand the need to finish and polish restorations and the techniques available;
- understand the principles of advanced restorative procedures;
- understand the principles of managment of the exposed dental pulp;
- be familiar with the options for replacing teeth, including both intra- and extra-coronal plastic and cast restorations, fixed and removable prostheses and dental implants;
- be familiar with the presenting oral and dental disease and disorders in the older adult.

Syllabus

- Management and implications of dental caries and tooth tissue loss
- Classificaiton , preparation and restoration of different cavities
- Use of hand and rotary instrumentation, matrices, subber dam
- Appropriate selection and use of restorative materials (temporary, permanent bonding agents etc.)
- Pulpal response to trauma and stimulus and pulp protection
- Finishing and polishing restorations
- Restoration of the edentulous space
- Manifestations of the aging dentition.
