Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- understand and apply the skills required for the management of the child patient
- recognise the specific problems associated with the restoration of teeth in the child patient
- understand the indications and contra-indications for deciduous extractions
- demonstrate a thorough knowledge of pre- and post-operative care, possible post-operative complications and methods for the control of haemorrhage
- demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the theory relating to the extraction of deciduous and the instruments used
- describe advanced restorative procedures for the child patient
- describe the management of dental injuries and the role of the dental therapist in this area
- describe the aetiology and features of tooth abnormalities
- describe the disorders associated with dental exfoliation and eruption in children
- describe the normal occlusion and the classification of malocclusion and their relation to dental caries and periodontal disease risks
- recognise the potential risks and consequences of orthodontic treatment.

- Child management techniques and behavioural patterns
- Local analgesia and pain management for the child
- Restorative techniques for deciduous teeth
- Managing dental trauma
- Deciduous extractions and post operative care
- Complications associated with treating children
- Rubber dam application for the paediatric patient
- Advanced restorative techniques for deciduous teeth to include pulpotomy, stainless steel crown and strip crowns
- Aetiology and features of tooth anomalies
- Disorders associated with dental exfoliation and eruption
- Classification of occlusion and malocclusion
- Preventive care of patients undergoing orthodontic intervention.
