Module summary

This module is for those who have mastered lower-intermediate Japanese. It aims to further develop knowledge and skills in the use and understanding of written and spoken materials on the basis of grammar already mastered.

Objectives

To continue Japanese language training and provide a solid grounding of intermediate grammar and vocabulary so as to develop both written and spoken communication skills for various contexts.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, students are expected to be able to:
1). Understand and hold an extended conversation and speech beyond daily conversation in natural speed in accordance with the contexts, topics and functions in a culturally appropriate manner.
2). Demonstrate further developed knowledge of Kanji (approximately 800+) both in reading and writing.
3). Understand various types of written passages including some authentic materials, and write a composition with accurate use of intermediate grammar and vocabulary.
4). Demonstrate basic translation skills beyond sentence level, both Japanese-English and English-Japanese.
5). Demonstrate good understanding of cultural and social issues in Japan, and make a short presentation both in speaking and writing.

Syllabus

This module will focus on both written and spoken skills, with special emphasis on communication skills in real contexts. Reading skills will be developed through reading various texts of different genres, and writing skills will be consolidated through writing short essays and translation exercises. Speaking skills will be enhanced through in-class conversation practice and presentations, and listening skills will be also trained through aural exercises both in and outside the class.
