Module summary

This module is an independent small-scale research project, designed and carried out with the support of an individual supervisor. Students will be expected to present their research using innovative digital tools that are appropriate to the content.

Objectives

In completing this module students will be able to:
- identify either a topic of immediate individual concern in the field of digital education, either in own professional context or more widely;
- engage in discussion with a tutor(s) concerning how this topic might be investigated;
- under supervision, carry out reading and study, and, if appropriate, empirical research, on this topic;
- put this topic in a broader perspective, ensuring where appropriate that the experience of more than one educational institution is considered and that recent evidence/research of the national/local situation is included;
- under supervision, write up and present the study in an appropriate form.

- Identifying a researchable problem in the area of Digital Education
- Designing a small-scale research study in the field of Digital Education
- Planning, conducting and writing a literature review
- Conducting a small-scale research project or extended literature review
- Presenting a research project using tools appropriate to the field of Digital Education


Syllabus

Students negotiate their dissertations on an individual basis at a dissertation proposal meeting held with their Academic Tutor.

Research skills will be taught and put into practice through this dissertation.

Students will be allocated a dissertation supervisor who will discuss the dissertation proposal and meet with them on a regular basis as the study progresses.

Private study

This module is an independent small scale research project although students may choose to undertake an extended literature review. With the support of an individual supervisor, students will work independently to develop research questions, find and read appropriate source material, design a research project (using skills developed in the research module), collect data where appropriate, analyse data and discuss findings in relation to the literature. Students will also work independently to write up the research and to present it using appropriate digital tools.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students progress will be monitored through the supervision meetings. Additional meetings may be arranged, as required, subject to agreement between the student and the supervisor.
