Module summary
You will learn how Maths and Physical Science subjects are researched and communicated through English. You will explore and develop your ability in writing literature reviews, reading scientific papers, preparing and making presentations, writing lab reports, discussing science in groups, and other fundamental skills.Objectives
This module aims to:1. help the transition of students from our partner institutions to higher education in the UK.
2. help students develop the language skills, knowledge and understanding required for study through the medium of English in the fields of Maths and the Physical Sciences
3. complement other subject modules helping students develop their language competence and ability to communicate at an appropriate academic level within the study of Maths and the Physical Sciences
Learning outcomes
Students will:
1. become familiar with the nature and culture of scientific research in the UK (MO1)
2. develop their ability to communicate scientific findings in an international context and through the medium of English (MO2, MO3)
3. communicate with appropriate levels of confidence or uncertainty through language (MO3)
4. analyse appropriate literature and practise literature searching, referencing and paraphrasing (MO3)
5. engage with concepts around academic integrity (MO1, MO2, MO3)
6. understand, appreciate and address different points of view, and be comfortable discussing scientific issues in small and large groups (MO1, MO2, MO3)
Syllabus
- Writing literature reviews – to include literature searching, referencing, plagiarism,
- Reading scientific papers – including comprehension, critical thinking, paraphrasing, recognising authoritative/non-authoritative sources,
- Preparing and making presentations
- Writing lab reports – to include scientific writing style, correct use of passive/active voice in science communication,
- Discussing science in groups

Private study
Students will be expected to read texts and analyse them to better be able to discuss them in class. Students will also be expected to undertake writing tasksThey will be expected to watch online material, radio programmes, lectures, etc. to incorporate ideas for their own consideration. The private study will contribute to the assessment tasks.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will submit work pertaining to the assessment tasks – plans, drafts etc., which will be considered and formative feedback will be given in 1-1 tutorials.Methods of assessment
