Grade B at A level in English Language or Literature or equivalent.
Students on programmes with English Literature & Language are not eligible to take this module as an Elective.

Module summary

This module will examine the basic 'levels' of language: the lexical and semantic; the phonetic and phonological; the grammatical; the level beyond the sentence.The module is thus concerned with the shape of words and meaning; how they sound; how they connect with each other in both writing and speech and also beyond the sentence.

Objectives

On completion of this module students should have acquired a knowledge both of the basic levels of language and also of the core concepts and terminology relevant to these levels.

They should be able to demonstrate a practical understanding of how the English language works in actual use.

Learning outcomes
Students will have developed:
- the ability to use written and oral communication effectively
- the capacity to analyse and critically examine diverse forms of discourse
- the ability to manage quantities of complex information in a structured and systematic way
- the capacity for independent thought and judgement
- critical reasoning
