Module summary

This module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their French to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in France and deepen their knowledge and understanding of French society and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.

Objectives

With their beginners' competence in French, students taking this module should be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop and extend their ability to communicate and function in French.

They should also further develop their understanding of Francophone culture and know how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking French and/or when in France.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read short texts in French;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- understand, and make themselves understood by, a a proficient native speaker in specific contexts;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of French and English;
- produce short pieces of independent writing in French;
- demonstrate their knowledge of key areas of grammar.

5. Discussing topics of current interest :fashion, living arrangements, travelling
6. Giving opinions, making comparisons and expressing preferences
7. Understanding and giving common instructions and commands
8. Making phone calls
9. Talking about problems and explaining solutions.
10. Cultural topics e.g. festivals

Private study

Guided independent study each week including homework, review of the lesson as well as preparation, practice and consolidation for the weekly classes, preparation for in-class task and the final exam.
