Module summaryThis module is for students who already have a basic knowledge of the language and wish to take their Italian to the next level. The emphasis is on achieving a practical level of communication in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) while developing greater confidence and accuracy when using the language in a limited range of situations. The module also aims to stimulate students' interest in Italy and deepen their knowledge and understanding of Italian society and some of the major cultural and linguistic differences.
ObjectivesWith their beginners' competence in Italian, students taking this module should be able to build on their existing knowledge of the language and develop and extend their ability to communicate and function in Italian.
They should also further develop their understanding of Italian culture and know how to avoid major social, cultural and linguistic faux pas when speaking Italian and/or when in Italy.
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of commonly used instructions, commands and expressions in the topics covered;
- read short texts in Italian;
- extract accurately the key information from audio and/or video material;
- handle short conversations in a familiar context;
- understand, and make themselves understood by, a sympathetic native speaker in specific contexts;
- demonstrate awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Italian and English;
- produce short pieces of independent writing in Italian;
- demonstrate their knowledge of key areas of grammar.

Private studyGuided independent study each week including homework, review of the lesson as well as preparation, practice and consolidation for the weekly classes, the portfolio and the final exam.
