Module summary

This module will expose you to a range of different management techniques for the development of a GIS application in the workplace. You will develop a project idea that is relevant to your workplace (where possible), working through the whole life cycle from design through to planning.

Objectives

On completion of the module students should:
- Have considered GIS project design and implementation methodology in workplace contexts.
- Understand what feasibility studies are and how they can be developed.
- Have practised compiling a feasibility study report.
- Have practised critically evaluating aspects of feasibility plans.
- Be aware of the range of potential implementation issues in changing workplace practice in a GIS development context.
- Have practised identifying risks of GIS development and mitigation measures to alleviate these risks.
- Have considered GIS developments in terms of:
End-user needs and requirements
Human and organisational issues
Data
Software
Functional requirements

- Information processing (including IT skills): literature searches
- Data manipulation (including IT skills): analysis of data (especially spatial data); statistical methods
