Objectives

This module is intended to build on the knowledge base gained from clinical practice, education or personal professional development. The aim of the module is to develop an ability to manage patients’ pain through the process of critically evaluating research and evaluation of current clinical practice.

Learning outcomes
To discuss the fundamental concepts underlying the origins and manifestation of pain; to explore critically the factors influencing pain management within the student's own care setting; to analyse and evaluate interventions for pain assessment, management and evaluation; to evaluate the application of pain management concepts to their own clinical practice area.


Syllabus

Pain physiology - acute, chronic, neurogenic, atypical pain; factors influencing pain - age, psychological/social/cultural/spiritual condition; living with pain - home, hospital and hospice care, carers, effects of pain, ethics of pain management; pain assessment - tools: visual analogue scores, verbal descriptor scales, behavioural signs, physiological measurement, pain charts; - factors influencing assessment: attitudes and beliefs, autonomy, empowerment; therapeutic interventions - pharmacology, methods of administration, - psychological - coping, distraction, relaxation, hypnosis, - complementary - aromatherapy, reflexology, acupuncture, - factors influencing the selection of interventions - scope of practice, accountability, - multidisciplinary approaches; evaluating pain - tools, quality, audit, research, factors influencing pain evaluation, patient and carer perspectives.
