Module summary
The aim of this module is to encourage students to consider the strategic direction of palliative care, in particular reviewing initiatives for carer involvement, decision making and treatment planning. Students will critically review tools and structures to support holistic assessment and care planning and explore ethical dilemmas from a carer and patient perspective.Objectives
On completion of this module, students will be able to:- critically appraise model(s) frameworks of assessment used in the delivery of palliative care;
- critique the policies and other influencing factors for common approaches to palliative care management;
- analyse how the diversity of patients and user perspectives have influenced palliative care management;
- explore how legal, public health, professional and ethical issues impact on the delivery of palliative care.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student should know:
- current national and local strategic recommendations promoting patient focused palliative care;
- ways in which knowledge gained through patient centred assessment informs good palliative care and works within palliative care strategy;
- the importance of patient/carer input in palliative care;
- local palliative care initiatives;
- ethical issues in palliative care practice.
